Translating Between Discovery and Capital
Jacqueline Olich, PhD
We advise universities, industry, philanthropy, capital allocators, and the founders turning discovery into ventures. We know how each of these worlds decides.
Across Institutional Boundaries
Universities, industry, philanthropy, capital, and founders operate on different incentives and time horizons, so alignment rarely happens on its own.
Veza's perspective is grounded in direct experience inside each of these worlds, translating what one side needs the other to understand.
Practice Areas
Veza advises across four practice areas, each an application of the same discipline, distinguishing institutional maturity from surface interest, capital rigor from performed diligence, and governance capacity from governance on paper.
Translation for Industry, Academia, and Philanthropy
Translation for Industry, Academia, and Philanthropy helps universities, industry partners, and philanthropic funders move together when they do not yet share a vocabulary.
Higher Education Expertise for Capital Allocators
Higher Education Expertise for Capital Allocators gives fund managers the fluency to understand how academic and scientific institutions make decisions.
Founder Development and Strategic Counsel
Founder Development and Strategic Counsel guides science-based founders and researchers through the decisions that shape a venture before the path forward is obvious.
Governance and Board Advisory
Governance and Board Advisory brings fiduciary and strategic judgment to boards and founder-led enterprises navigating consequential transitions.
insight
Recent essays examine what happens at the boundaries between institutions, how trust is built, why translation sometimes fails, and what leaders need to see before consequential decisions are made.
Standing and Judgment
Veza works inside each of these worlds at once. It shapes university partnerships for a capital allocator in digital infrastructure, advises a biotechnology company moving discovery toward commercialization, and works alongside founders carrying research out of universities. That standing rests on judgment that began with co-founding Diba Industries and serving as a director through its acquisition by Halma plc. It deepened on the graduate faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill, expanded at RTI International, and is exercised now on behalf of others.
“The value is not access for its own sake. It is knowing what and whom to bring to bear on a consequential decision.”
Why Veza
Veza is the Croatian word for connection, rooted in an old Slavic word for tying or binding. In everyday use, it carries a second sense, knowing whom to call and when. Jacqueline Olich chose the name in homage to her heritage, with both meanings in mind. It was never a metaphor.
It describes the work.
For Strategic Advisory or Speaking Inquiries
Veza advises leaders and institutions carrying something new into structures not yet built to receive it. Strategic advisory and speaking inquiries are welcome.
